What is an Ambivert?

Catherine Li

An ambivert is someone who falls in between the spectrum of introversion and extraversion. They share qualities with both introverts and extroverts and may bounce around the spectrum in different situations.

Ambiverts are able to adjust and adapt themselves to various circumstances. They also recognize when to talk and when to listen. For example, an extrovert may start up small talk during a silent elevator ride, while an introvert may look at their phone to avoid conversation. But, an ambivert may be outgoing or quiet based on its fellow riders.

Signs of an ambivert:

- Can be sociable in various contexts, but values solitude

Has the ability to listen and communicate

- Have no preference for solo and group work

- Is comfortable in most environments

- Easily empathizes and trusts others

- Likes being around others, but eventually feels drained

- Can develop and manage relationships with ease

- Understands how to interact with varied personalities

Fundamentally, ambiverts are individuals who share qualities with both extroverts and introverts but can’t categorize themselves as one because of their flexibility.
